The 13 best PC games

1. Half-Life: Alyx

Virtual reality (VR) is a very interesting technology and it is not for nothing that millions of gamers worldwide are following the advances in the entertainment industry. The really big success hasn’t been achieved so far, but games like Beat Saber have already shown how much potential there is in this relatively young medium. With the right hand, sufficient skill and a clear mind, really great VR titles can be created. The latest example comes from Valve and finally gives players a new HL game with  Half-Life: Alyx *, after 13 long years. But is it also worth it?

The story of Half-Life: Alyx takes place after the events of Half-Life 1 and five years before Half-Life 2. However, the player does not take on the role of Gordon Freeman as usual, but that of Alyx Vance, a resistance fighter who works with her father is fighting against the occupation of the earth by the Combine.

Apart from the controls, the gameplay remains true to its predecessors. Although the well-known gravity gun has been replaced by a pair of hip gloves, the principle remains the same. We actually think this decision is pretty good, because the Gravity Gloves, which can be used at any time, are much better suited for the sometimes quite fast gameplay.

Our conclusion to Half-Life: Alyx – Valve has created a worthy successor to the Half-Life series with their new VR title and, in our opinion, set a new, huge milestone in the VR industry. There has never been so much ambition, technical performance and attention to detail in any other VR game. From us a very clear must-play and already one of the best PC games of 2022!

2. Call Of Duty: Warzone

When Call of Duty: Mobile was released for iOS and Android last October, the dream of a free version of the cult shooter became a reality. With a total of over 100 million downloads in the first week alone, the team behind the game set a new start record. But less than 6 months later, Infinity Ward and Raven Software have taken on the popular Blackout mode from Black Ops 4 and created a full-fledged battle royale game with several unique modes and a free game model.

Call of Duty: Warzone * creates space for 150 players (200 in the future) who can fight each other simultaneously on the huge map decorated with Easter eggs. Anyone who is now thinking of another, boring Battle Royale copy, is clearly wrong. Warzone offers many new features that we have not seen in any other game of the genre and thus creates a completely new gaming experience even for storm-tested players. The usual, fast and above all fluid CoD gameplay is retained and many of the known weapons, perks and shooting series can be found in the game.

Anyone who has already played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be happy about the following feature: The progress of both player accounts is shared, including the Battle Pass, so that weapon blueprints, skins and other objects can still be collected.

3. Doom Eternal

Oh Doom, how beautiful you are. Since the first person shooter appeared in 1993 and set a milestone in the field of computer games, no other video game has been unpacked more often at our Lan parties than this masterpiece of damnation. Really now .. We LOVE Doom and were all the more hyped when the series was relaunched in 2016.

Doom Eternal * was recently released and it didn’t take long to get hold of it in our greedy fingers. But what is actually different? Basically everything is just bigger. Bigger guns. Greater demons. A bigger story campaign. Oh yes and blood, a lot of blood. But the most decisive change is the new, and in our eyes a bit too dominant, resource system which rewards the player with health, armor and ammunition when he sends a demon back to the underworld with the help of a bloody finisher.

In addition, the multiplayer mode has been revised and more focus has been placed on a competitive gaming experience. In the “battle mode” two players compete as demons against a single player as a slayer. A “Best-of-5” is played in a small arena and the goal is to completely eliminate the opposing team. More information about the new model is available here.

Of course, in the 21st century, id Software has also thought of all the collectors among us. Experience points can be collected diligently in single and multiplayer modes in order to unlock new skins and other interesting extras.

4. Borderlands 3

With the success of the first Borderlands in 2009, the game series created something new, because “loot shooters” like the one from the Gearbox Software development studio simply didn’t exist back then. A huge open world full of humor, weapons and wacky adventures was created and could captivate millions of players to the screens. But can the exterminators still convince in 2019?

The answer is a very resounding “Yes!”, Even if the game has certainly not reinvented itself. Even after a decade, it’s the formula that made the series such a hit. In our eyes, Borderlands 3 * is another masterpiece of gaming history and offers even more worlds to discover, an even duller sense of humor and, of course, of course much, much, much more weapons and equipment to plunder.

We’re looking forward to many more DLC’s with new crazy characters, interesting locations and well-told stories in the third part of the series. Oh, and guns, of course. We love guns!

5. Ion Fury

Ion Fury * is an action-packed, crazy and, above all, bloody first person shooter based on the classics of the 90s. But can he do it? At least we can reveal one thing: It looks and plays like one of the famous titles of our childhood, “Duke Nukem” and “Shadow Warrior”. No wonder, because Ion Fury is based on the EDukes32 engine and was developed by 3D Realms, the studio that is also responsible for the success of Duke Nukem 3D.

In summary, Ion Fury is about freeing the city from heaps of enemies and killing everything that gets in your way with a huge and brutal arsenal of weapons. So exactly what the shooter fans of the 90s loved so much: fast paced gameplay, non-linear levels, secrets and lots of blood. In our opinion, definitely a good game, even if it doesn’t quite match the old classics.

Fun fact: Ion Fury was supposed to be released under the name “Ion Maiden”. However, the British music group “Iron Maiden” was not that happy with it and sued 3D Realms because of the similarity of names.

6. Darksiders Genesis

The Darksiders franchise is great and we’ve been big fans of the top-down hack-and-slash series since it was born in 2010, even if the last offshoots were unfortunately a bit sobering. With the release of Darksiders 3 things went uphill again and we were all the more looking forward to the “semi-sequel” called Darksiders Genesis *, which brings a change of perspective and other interesting innovations.

One of the innovations mentioned is the constant change between the two main characters “War” and “Strife”. War is a loyal rider who fights for the council and uses his huge blade to kill all enemies within reach. Strife, on the other hand, prefers to empty his two pistols from a distance, destroying any angel or demon that gets in his way.

Although Genesis is often compared to Diablo, it is very little about looting and leveling. Despite a change of perspective and additional character, Darksiders remains true to its roots and continues to offer a lot of variety with its game world, such as climbing passages and small puzzles.

7. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

For several years now, video games have kept the Star Wars franchise alive while the Hollywood forge is working on the next blockbuster. EA secured the licenses and has since released a handful of games that take place in the diverse Star Wars universe. Most of the titles were actually really good and kept us busy for hours. Others, however, made huge headlines and made many fans incredibly angry. But different with this game:

In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order * you play a young padawan named Cal Kestis, who barely survived Order 66 and now has the task of traveling through the galaxy and rebuilding the old Jedi order. So much for the story, because it is really exciting and well conveyed.

The game feels like a mixture of Dark Souls with a pinch of Uncharted, which have come together in the depths of the sci-fi universe. The gameplay is unexpectedly extensive and there is a lot to discover. Unlike in Jedi Knight, there is no possibility to switch to the dark side, but there are many cool power skills that can be learned depending on the play style.

The game world of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also impressive. There are several planets to discover, each with their own charm, hidden areas and shortcuts. Lots of different enemies and bosses who make the brain glow with their different attack patterns. The Respawn Entertainment team didn’t skimp on details when designing the planets, the surroundings and the corridors.

All in all a really successful title, which we can only recommend to every Star Wars and Dark Souls fan. May the Force, or in this case multiple deaths, be with you!

8. The Outer Worlds

With The Outer Worlds *, the development studio Obsidian Entertainment has once again proven that they have mastered the craft of a good role-playing game and this time they take us into a futuristic alternative world.

The rough story is told very quickly: On board a colonist ship we were awakened from cryosleep by the mad scientist Phineas Welles and placed on a planet near the colony of Emerald Vale. Now it is our task to travel to foreign planets and find out what the mighty megacorporations, which systematically exploit and suppress the inhabitants, are up to.

Okay, it’s not that simple and boring after all. The Outer Worlds was supposed to be a “further development” of the classic Fallout New Vegas, and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. This is noticeable in the many parallels between the two games: Starting with the seemingly innumerable dialogues and branched quest lines, to the familiar shooting and fighting behavior.

And playing is similar to the Fallout titles. Travel through the planets inhabited by NPCs and creatures, collect weapons and other pieces of equipment, upgrade them with all kinds of materials, slaughter your way through other nasty enemies and at the end of the day repair your favorite weapon, after all, we want to upgrade it even more!

Obsidian Entertainment’s new sci-fi RPG definitely deserves a place in every game library. The humor is reminiscent of the unofficial predecessor and the many different solutions give you enough motivation for a second or even third round.

9. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

Before the release of the free-to-play hit Call of Duty: Warzone, a reboot of the successful classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare * was released. Infinity Ward dared to pick up the jewel again and did not disappoint us.

The goal was not a continuation of the Modern Warfare series, but a new edition of the first part with a completely new plot. 12 years after the first release, it should now be more realistic, harder, more emotional and, above all, more believable, because the game draws on current world events.

We’re playing again alongside Captain Price, who we already know from the first three Modern Warfare parts. Our task is to eliminate a new terror group that has gained access to chemical weapons and is now perpetrating attacks in Europe. The head of the group is said to be a man with the code name “Wolf” who operates in the fictional country of Urzikstan.

The story of the meanwhile 16th part of the Call of Duty series arouses curiosity and serves all fans who have long wanted a reboot of the classic. The game feels good, the atmosphere comes across great, there is more focus on tactical procedures and the movement and handling of the weapons just feel right.

All in all a great new edition, even if we think that Infinity Ward didn’t quite dare to bring the story to the climax here. It’s a shame because the potential would have been there.

10. Anno 1800

Anno, that development strategy game from Mainz has been around for almost 20 years and has firmly established itself as the flagship of the genre. In April 2019, the long-awaited seventh part ( Anno 1800 *) of the series finally came and gives us a profound insight into the industrial revolution of the 19th century.

For all those who have never had an Anno part in hand, here is a brief explanation before it goes to the shame corner: It’s about building a prosperous city in regions with many islands. The player starts, depending on the game setting, with a ship and must first of all scout out an island on which the metropolis is ultimately to emerge.

A wide variety of criteria such as fertility, nature and location of the island must be observed. Because in order for the city to grow, we have to satisfy our citizens and produce a wide variety of consumer goods such as food, clothing and jewelry. In order to be able to build up the sometimes complex production chains, the settlement of new islands is crucial, because not every country also offers the required raw materials.

So that we don’t get bored, up to 3 computer opponents colonize the islands with us, they are either peaceful or warlike. And as if that weren’t enough, pirates are wreaking havoc on the vast seas and are just waiting to attack our merchant ships and steal our valuable goods. However, if you don’t feel like it, you can let off steam with the countless setting options in the free game mode.

Anno 1800 continues this gameplay with a beautiful backdrop and also offers us an exciting campaign with many interesting scenarios. But long-term motivation in the free game mode is also provided, because the age of industrialization begins and the locomotives, oil pumps and large factories must never stand still!
